One of the most common and very unsanitary varieties we encounter in cockroach pest control is the adult German cockroach, as well as the American cockroach. German cockroaches are tan in color, with two dark stripes on their thorax (behind their head) and about one-half inch to five-eighths of an inch long. They have well-developed wings, but do not fly.  Nymphs are small and brownish in color, and travel in numbers.

Other types of unsanitary cockroaches for which people should retain a cockroach exterminator include the American cockroach, Oriental Cockroach, and Brown Banded Roach.  The Pennsylvania Wood Roach is not an unsanitary pest, just an occasional invader that tends to resemble the German Cockroach.

How to Identify Cockroach Activity Around Your Home or Property

Cockroaches are year-round, mostly nocturnal pests who scatter when a light is turned on. Large infestations may be visible during the day. It’s important to remember that cockroaches can live for a few days or up to a month without food, so they may be present even if you can’t see them.

Key Signs of cockroach infestation can include:

  • The sight of fecal trails (which are exactly what they sound like) or other secretions
  • The smell of an unusual smell from secretions or fecal trails
  • The sound of hissing or chirping noises

Disease and Property Damage that Cockroaches Can Cause

Since cockroaches tend to harbor in sewers and unsanitary places, they spread bacteria to surfaces and cause foodborne illness.  A cockroach picks up anything it walks through on its legs – so if it walks through a litter box and then your counter, it can deposit salmonella bacteria that causes disease and foodborne illness.

Cockroaches are known to cause asthma attacks, allergic reactions, cramps and vomiting. They carry bacteria that cause food poisoning, dysentery, and gastroenteritis.

In commercial establishments and restaurants, cockroaches have caused expensive loss of food from entire walk-in coolers, as well as dry product goods, upon health department determination.

Cockroach Biology

Cockroaches are common and hardy primitive insects that can thrive in a wide range of environments. The German cockroach has a highly-developed social structure that involves cockroach cohabitation, social dependence, information transfer, and even kin recognition. A female German cockroach must only be impregnated once to develop an egg, and then she can develop eggs on her own going forward.  She can produce up to 14 eggs in her lifetime, each egg holding 20 to 30 nymphs (baby cockroaches). They undergo a gradual metamorphosis, molting at each stage to get bigger. Their lifecycle begins as an egg, then nymph, then adult. Cockroaches can live for up to a year.
